DPP Group Lifestyle Balance™ Coach Training

The Diabetes Prevention Support Center of the University of Pittsburgh offers Lifestyle Coach training in delivery of the Diabetes Prevention Program Group Lifestyle Balance™ program. 

The Group Lifestyle Balance™ program was adapted directly from the Diabetes Prevention Program’s (DPP) successful lifestyle intervention by members of the original DPP Lifestyle Resource Core at the University of Pittsburgh. The DPP Group Lifestyle Balance™ program has been shown to be effective in reducing weight and other risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the community. 

The DPP Group Lifestyle Balance™ program is an approved curriculum for application to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program. For more information about the DPP Group Lifestyle Balance™ program click here.

The informative and practical two-day DPP Group Lifestyle Balance™ training workshop is designed to provide attendees with the background, information, and skills necessary to conduct the healthy lifestyle change program in a wide variety of health care and community settings.  

The workshop is provided by experienced University of Pittsburgh faculty from the original DPP team who have been implementing and evaluating the DPP Group Lifestyle Balance™ program in the community for the past decade*.  To date the DPSC faculty have trained more than 2,000 health providers to across the United States and internationally to become Lifestyle Coaches.

*The faculty members of the non-profit University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Prevention Support Center (DPSC) have assigned all individual rights to receive income from the copyrighted DPP Group Lifestyle Balance Program™ (DPP GLB) and its derivatives to the University of Pittsburgh. Therefore, DPSC faculty receive no personal remuneration from DPP GLB training or licensing fees. Some of the training and licensing fees received by the University of Pittsburgh are directed to the DPSC and are budgeted to permit the center to provide additional services at no cost to the public, researchers, and to a variety of community providers. These services include maintaining and updating the DPP GLB curriculum and website and other social media to extend the reach and impact of diabetes prevention, offering training scholarships and other pro bono teaching and training services, and delivering ongoing support to DPP GLB providers across the country and internationally as they provide diabetes prevention programs in the community.


Cost: $499 for the two-day workshop

In addition to the training, all workshop attendees will receive a bound copy of the complete DPP Group Lifestyle Balance Manual of Operations, Fat and Calorie Counter book, pedometer, self-monitoring booklet, DPP Group Lifestyle Balance™ 12 Session DVD  and Post Core Support Physical Activity DVD. Breakfast, lunch, and refreshments on both days are also included.  Please contact the Diabetes Prevention Support Center directly with any dietary requests.

Continuing Education Credits

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to earn 12.5 continuing education contact hour credits in the following disciplines:

  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CECH Category I),
  • Social Work (SW),
  • Continuing Professional Education (CPE),
  • Continuing Nursing Education (CNE), and
  • Certified in Public Health Recertification Credit (CPH).

This educational activity is jointly provided by the Diabetes Prevention Support Center of the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.  Successful participants may be awarded 12.5 Continuing Nursing Education Contact Hours by completing the two-day workshop. Attendees must remain for the duration of the Workshop to receive CNE credit. The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This Workshop is offered for 12.5 hours of social work continuing education through co-sponsorship of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work, a Council on Social Work Education-accredited school and, therefore, a PA pre-approved provider of social continuing education. These credit hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW, LPC and LMFT biennial license renewal. All Workshop attendees will receive a Certificate of Completion at the conclusion of the workshop.  Attendees must attend the entire two-day Workshop to receive their Certificate of Completion.
